Stitch House is located on the edge of Santorini’s capital city, Thera, in the Greek Aegean Sea. The island has recently become over-crowded with tourism beyond the capacity that the island can manage. As a consequence, the island and its settlements are faced with problems associated with big cities, without the infrastructure to handle them. At the same time, the proliferation of Airbnb and rising housing costs leaves many workers without a home.

The project addresses these issues through the creation of high-density, municipally-funded housing. The project began with research into a mat building in Kyoto and a portion of a historic settlement on Santorini. These precedents provide insight into two forms of density: one designed for contemporary housing and one developed over many centuries. By stitching together elements of both the mat building typology and the traditional Cycladic settlements, a new type of high-density living is created.

Bound between the town settlement and the island’s agricultural landscape, Stitch House functions as a bridge between the two. A series of overlapping housing groups address the multiple faces of the site, both urban and agricultural. Where the groups overlap, they interact in a way similar to the traditional cave houses on the island. Within this grid, public programs such as a market, cafe, garden, kindergarten/daycare center, and donkey housing are carved out of the larger housing volumes. More intimate, shared spaces include a figural roof, gym, communal kitchen, and sculptural viewing areas. These programs are designed as ancillary programs for locals, benefiting more than just the residents. Connections to nearby, existing public programs via a landscaped path—a playground, a public open-air theater, three churches, and one cemetery—further activate the area beyond the site.

Harnessing Water points to a crucial need for the long-term sustainable development of Vieques, Puerto Rico. Hurricanes and heavy rains cause flooding by overwhelming traditional drainage infrastructure, or by overcoming hard barriers between water bodies and human settlements with storm surges. Our strategies assume that if we view water as an adversary, we cannot expect to overcome it. We must instead consider its sustentive power.
We propose to harness the power of water by integrating it into the built environment at all scales. On the architectural scale, we have developed an “anchor house” pointing toward building design on Vieques that can provide durable hurricane- and earthquake-resistant housing on the island. The concepts in the house design can be used to construct a home from scratch, or to retrofit an existing building to increase its self-sufficiency.

Elements of the house include solar power and rainwater collection, a specially-braced seismically-sound area, raised piers, and a veranda that is structurally separate from the roof. A system of rainwater tanks is structurally integrated with the roof such that the weight of the stored water can resist the hurricane-force winds acting on the roof during a severe storm.

At the larger landscape scale, bioretention areas, wet ponds, and rainwater gardens will decrease stormwater runoff and flooding during storm events. These interventions will also decrease sediment and PAH (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon) runoff that may damage off-shore wildlife. Coupled with soil-based filtration systems, these strategies have the potential to recharge groundwater and decrease the salinity of the water table. The Esperanza environs provide the case-study for intervention since they fall within the largest alluvial valley on Vieques, where a recharged water table can make a crucial difference in resiliency and self-sufficiency.

Central to this approach can be the integration of the needs of local residents and visitors into ancillary uses of water-related green infrastructures. Within the large drainage basin, differing site locations can engage various associated activities: the enjoyment of landscape, ecological education, historical education, sports, and agriculture, among others. When sites fall within the Esperanza town fabric, they can be integrated into the site design of our anchor house or similar structures that are designed to withstand flooding. Bioretention sites placed between houses may also be connected to overflow from their rooftop rainwater collection systems.

We additionally propose an educational park on the site of railway and sugarcane warehouse ruins near Esperanza, re-purposing old rail lines as a historic walkway that allows visitors to enjoy the naturally-occurring wetlands. This strategy is critical of current proposals to heavily develop and densify this wetland area including the Sunbay Project. Our strategies are intended to help Vieques become a model for the Caribbean that promotes a long-term view of biological and social resilience.

A radical flatness contributes to the overall efficiency and accessibility of the social housing project for seniors. At only three stories high, each floor generates horizontal linkages between programs and neighbors. A figural ground floor links multiple community programs together. Programs on the outer edge serve the community at large (an after school program, garden shop, etc.), while those near the interior serve the residential community (a large pool, a pottery classroom, etc.).

Bridgeport’s rich history of manufacturing is deeply intertwined with its maritime infrastructure, waterfront, and residential districts. Near the boundary of the South End and Downtown neighborhoods of the city, the diverse urban fabric reveals these histories: an operational coal and gas-powered power plant sits directly adjacent to nineteenth-century wooden-frame homes and a waterfront park; the University of Bridgeport’s stately mansions and mid-century administrative buildings are less than 1,000 feet away. A lighthouse sits on the eastern edge of this area, marking the mouth of Bridgeport Harbor at Tongue Point.

The majority of manufacturing operations (producing sewing machines, electrical motors, and household appliances, among other items) that constructed massive factory buildings in the city have left Bridgeport over the past fifty years. Like the United States at large, the city’s industries have shifted from producing goods to producing services.1 Although some argue that a service economy can allow for a better economic accounting of complex ecological and social components of human labor, it may simultaneously further alienate people from the physical products of their labor. Reintegrating selected forms of manufacturing into the economy may serve as an antidote to this alienation. Furthermore, as the citizens of the City of Bridgeport reconsider their relationship to the waterfront in the wake of flooding events such as Hurricane Sandy, and as they anticipate sea level rise and extreme storms, enhancing the maritime economies of the city may indeed prove prescient.

The Bridgeport Sealink maritime arts and sciences campus will simultaneously provide a pathway to jobs paying salaries above national averages in a host of related fields2 (lighthouse construction and maintenance, ferry operation and maintenance, boat building, dock design and construction, ecologically sound dredging, ocean navigation and mapping, etc.) and will create a link from the city fabric to the shoreline landscape with a matrix of open space. Pedestrian and vehicular pathways will connect the adjacent University of Bridgeport as well as the Frederick Law Olmsted-designed Seaside Park to the new campus. The campus will incorporate classroom and workroom spaces for 1,000–2,000 post-secondary students of various levels working in small groups with faculty. Full- and part-time faculty will range from 150–200 positions depending on the season. The campus will additionally house an advanced study program for high-schoolers (about 100–150 students at a time), and will provide housing to a limited number of faculty.
Construction of the campus entails the dredging of a large portion of the Tongue Point area to create a new inlet for docking ships used for study on the campus. The site’s soil is primarily composed of fill contaminated by years of heavy industrial use, so soil remediation will be a major component of the early construction phases. The campus plan incorporates this cleaned fill into new topographies around the site that will mitigate flooding. Expertise gained during this phase of the project will be applied to the training of students who can eventually take part in regional dredging projects required to maintain Bridgeport’s status as a deep-sea port (it is currently in danger of losing its status).3 The main buildings of the campus study program will be shipbuilding sheds, three of which will specialize in different materials needed to construct boats (wood, steel, and fiberglass). A fourth, larger shed will house a dry dock and will be used primarily for the maintenance and repair of ferries and other civilian craft. A control tower on a jetty at the eastern edge of the site will also house classrooms and an auditorium for the campus in addition to a working control room serving the new inlet and ferry traffic to the north.

The campus additionally incorporates two public-facing elements into its design: a restored wetland that covers the southern part of the site, and a new ferry building on the northern end of the site. The wetland will connect to Seaside Park via a system of elevated pathways, providing a natural component to the public waterfront that will complement the stately nineteenth-century prominades of the current park. The wetland extension of the park will provide a softer water’s edge that will be able to better absorb the force of powerful storm surges than the hard edge of the current park extents. The ferry building on the north side of the campus will serve the proposed expanded ferry service to Bridgeport. This expanded regional service is proposed as an analogue to the success of expanded ferry service in New York City.4 In the same way that ferry service has spurred job creation in New York City,5 increased ferry service in Bridgeport will generate jobs and will work hand-in-hand with the Sealink campus to provide training partnerships and jobs for students and recent graduates of various campus programs.

The library aims to provide a respite from the visual, vehicular, pedestrian, and commercial activity of the street at the ground level while opening up to views of the historic fabric of the neighborhood at higher levels. The building is structured around a core of shifted, layered public spaces that allow for deep filtration of light from a skylight at the top of the building.

Acting in tandem with the public spaces (auditorium, café, etc.) that fill the central core, and which are illuminated by filtered daylight, other more private work spaces (librarian offices, maker spaces, etc.) inhabit the interstitial space wrapping around these central public areas. Though these private spaces do not receive daylight from the central skylight, they will receive a different quality of light through the façade of the building, which will appear as an opaque solid at a distance but will in fact provide views from the inside out by way of a screened facade.

The East River Estuary Center provides educational programming for elementary- through high-school-aged students in the New York City area. The Center’s focal point is a wetlands frame, a bracketed area of the river which is filtered through an outer protective berm. This filtration berm allows for the collection of scientific data concerning the East River estuary system’s ecological health. The buffering of the interior aquatic space from the estuary at large also allows for the restoration of the enclosed space to its pre-industrial state.

In this enclosed space of pre-industrial estuary “soft ground,” teaching areas will house eelgrass, oysters, and other species native to the East River ecosystem. At the time of colonial settlement, the site of the Center, where Sixth Street meets the riverfront, was the point of entry for two tributary streams into the harbor.

At the deeper end of the framed area, a floating four-story observation “barge” will house the Center’s main study and teaching rooms. The barge will move up and down with the tides, connected by a ramp to the pavilion. Protected from the swift East River currents by the berm, the barge will register the vertical cycles of the tide. The final component of the Center is a system of two research areas, which take the form of enclosed ramps that start at the center of the pavilion and tilt down and curve towards the deeper part of the river to facilitate sample collection for wetlands research.

The theatre is situated in a formerly industrial waterfront area in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. This area is directly north of and adjacent to Bushwick Inlet, which connects to the East River. The inlet was once the start of a natural freshwater stream, but became polluted through the 19th and early 20th century as a result of its proximity to the industrial activities of the neighborhood. The City of New York is in the process of revitalizing its waterfront along the East River, and as a result, the city-owned park area containing the inlet directly to the south of the building site on Franklin Avenue is slated to be restored as a public park.
Several waterfront areas in the neighborhood have already opened to the public. To the south, the East River State Park sits on the foundation of an industrial terminal building. Just north of the state park, a portion of the Bushwick Inlet Park contains a new outdoor sports field facing the East River and a new community facility connecting the field to Franklin Street.

The theater participates in the realignment of the neighborhood to its waterfront by maintaining a low, visually open lobby on the south side of the building site. This area will provide circulation through to the theater while simultaneously permitting pedestrian connections from the street to the new waterfront park.
In the public-facing sides of the building, containing the lobby and restaurant, a glazed curtain wall provides natural light. An overhang calibrated to let in direct sunlight in the winter but not in the summer provides warmth in the winter and shading in the summer. The rooftop studio is lit by skylights from above and by glazing on its walls. The rooftop garden surrounding the studio space is sheltered by a perforated corten steel wall, providing partial shade along the edges of the garden, and allowing visitors to walk around the garden freely.

Situated on the steep caldera of an ancient volcano,
the dense villages of the Cycladic island of Santorini, Greece are primarily
composed of cave houses that are dug out of the soft volcanic soil. Out of these foundational
dwellings grew additional structures extending outside of the caves. These
homes were layered and pressed together in organic growth over many centuries. As
a foundation to understanding the context for a public housing project proposed
in the city of Fira, we undertook a study of some of the oldest cliff settlements
on the island, in the town of Oia.

In the 1940s, the planners of a new waterworks system utilizing the Lerma River as a source of water for Mexico City retained the architect Ricardo Rivas to design a sump station in Chapultepec Park, the terminus of a new aqueduct bringing water into Mexico City. In coordination with the planners, in 1950 Rivas in turn commissioned Diego Rivera to design a mural and fountain for the facility. Like mural precedents such as those in the Secretaría de Educación Pública building in Mexico City, the intent of these artistic components was to turn the station building, which housed one small component of the physical infrastructure of the massive waterworks project, into a poetic explication and celebration of the bureaucratic and social infrastructure required to construct both the building itself and the project it synecdochally monumentalized. During its construction in 1951, at a key period of modernization in Mexico, the project of so-called plastic integration (borrowing from the more common Spanish term integración plástica) of this building and its constituent parts was harnessed by both the radical architectural functionalism of Rivas and Rivera and the nationalist interests of Mexico’s federal government.

            The
system of umbrella structures was developed as a result of investigations and
research into tensile and thin shell forms. Hyperbolic-parabaloid surfaces
were generated with analog means (stretching fabric over a three-dimensional
frame). These doubly-curving surfaces were then used as a basis for forming
thin, reinforced plaster shells.
