Situated on the steep caldera of an ancient volcano, the dense villages of the Cycladic island of Santorini, Greece are primarily composed of cave houses that are dug out of the soft volcanic soil. Out of these foundational dwellings grew additional structures extending outside of the caves. These homes were layered and pressed together in organic growth over many centuries. As a foundation to understanding the context for a public housing project proposed in the city of Fira, we undertook a study of some of the oldest cliff settlements on the island, in the town of Oia.
